Before You Shop
So, you made an appointment to shop for your wedding gown. Now what?
We want to ensure that you have the most comfortable, personalized, and productive shopping experience while finding the perfect gown. So we’ve put together some tips to help you prep before your visit—from who to bring to what to wear.
Know your budget. Why? Because our goal is to help you find “the one.” This is both valuable information for us, as well as for you during your planning process.
Pick your posse. Your mom, your sister, your maid-of-honor—whoever it may be! Be sure to make the appointment when the key people you need to help you make a decision are available. Try to narrow it down to the opinions that matter most. [i.e. You might become overwhelmed if you bring That Friend Who Talks Too Much.] Ultimately it’s your opinion that matters, so bring people who are supportive and know what you like. (Also, no more than six people are allowed at an appointment.)
Book separate appointments. At The Gown Shop, we encourage brides to book an additional appointment for accessories— including headpieces, shoes, and jewelry. That way, there will not be a time crunch, and we can focus solely on ensuring we’re finding the right gown for you. Speaking of time crunch: We also recommend that customers do not schedule back-to-back appointments (i.e. at another bridal shop)—and not more than two appointments in one day.
Do your research. Check out our ANN ARBOR DESIGNERS and/or PERRYSBURG DESIGNERS to view the gown designers and style that we cater to at The Gown Shop. We do not carry a designer’s full collection – so if you are dying to try on something specific, ask if we have it beforehand. If not, we can always borrow it in for you from the designer.
Bring all wedding information that will be helpful in choosing your gown: photos from magazines, venue details, the overall feeling you want to have on your big day.
Plan ahead. We recommend shopping and purchasing seven or more months before your wedding day. But do not panic if you are less than seven months away. We may have to rush order your gown, depending on season/designer/gown/etc. But we also have sample gowns available at The Gown Shop – Rack!
Think about what will be under the gown, too. We recommend wearing undergarments that mimic those that you will wear on your wedding day. If you prefer to be more covered with a body shaper or Spanx – more power to you! We do all the heavy lifting for you from pulling the gowns to assisting you into them.
Be vocal. As the gorgeous fabrics and silhouettes start to come on, we want your thoughts to come out. We will have a private moment with you first, and we want and need to hear your opinion of the gown in order to assist you. Always remember: You’re the bride. Your opinion and feeling is the one that matters most.
Relax. Gown shopping should not be a stressful experience. We’re here to help you (we love what we do, and we know what we’re doing!). Ask our staff questions as you have them—and be sure to step back and simply enjoy how amazing you look.
Don’t be afraid to say “YES” to the dress! Sometimes we hear brides say, “I didn’t expect to find my dress today.” Well then, expect the unexpected! Prepare to purchase. Of course, it’s a big decision, but if you’ve come into the store knowing your budget, knowing what you like (and don’t like), and you find a dress that you love—go with it! TV shows and movies often play up that brides put on dress after dress to find “the one.” But trying on a ton of gowns at a ton of shops usually only complicates and exhausts the decision-making process.
We’re so glad that we get to help you find the perfect dress for your big day. Feel free to shoot us an email or give us a call if you have any questions before your visit. We cannot wait to see you soon!
